Bayonetta is the combo-master
Tuesday, January 19, 2010So I’ve been playing a bit of Bayonetta lately, and I must say I really think that the game kicks Devil May Crys ass actually, Dante you may be amazingly cool but I don’t think you’ll rack up the combos like Bayonetta does.

I’m not that much for these types of gameplay to me these games only becomes good when they have good cut-scenes and an interesting storyline. Devil May Cry definitely has that, but Bayonetta has me kind of lost from the beginning. Mainly because during that prologue scene of the game you fight enemies whilst a narrator tells the intro-story of the game, even with subtitles it was really hard to keep the enemies at bay and listening to the story at the same time. Oh well, the combat takes a while to get used to mainly because there is an insane amount of combos you can do. You got the basic quick-punch and hard kick attack placed on two buttons. These two buttons can create different combos, we then have punch combos, kick combos, punch&kick combos, when executing these combos you can always kick the opponents up in the air to continue the combo whilst airborne.
And there is much more, at every punch or kick in the game, even those attacks within a combo can be released into blast-away gunfire. Say that you do a combo having Bayonetta punch punch and then kick the opponent in the face with a straight side-kick, you can actually hold down the kick-button and have Bayonetta blast away with her boot-mounted firearms as well as the ones she holds in her hand. I don’t know if you guys know but this gal carries some serious fire-power, she has two handguns mounted on her boots, two in her hands and to top it off she can actually fire these whenever.

In the beginning of the game we see Bayonetta blast away with her guns at an amazing speed, twirling around doing really acrobatic stuff to hit her enemies, amazing stuff really. I thought to myself, if I could do that in-game that would be amazing, and you know what? You actually can. If you rotate the stick clock-wise 360 degress and then uses either punch or the kick button bayonetta will start using her guns on all enemies around her. You then shoot away with your attack button and use the analogue sticks to look around 360 degrees. This mechanic can also be used in middle of combos and in the air, so when facing a lot of smaller weaker enemies this is definitely the way to rack up the killcount fast.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, one more thing that adds some extra spice to the combos is the witch-time, when successfully dodging an attack from an enemy at the last second you’ll activate a slow-motion mechanic where every enemy moves a lot slower while Bayonetta keeps moving at normal speed, it’s really satisfying pulling those moments off.
I’ve only played this game for like an hour or two but I can tell that this is going to be amazing. I seriously recommend the game for everyone that is into this genre. For those who does not believe me check this out:

Great thoughts on the game. I’m not so interested in this game, the demo didn’t do anything to change that. But then again, I’ve never been much of a “DMC” fan.
But I gave DMC4 a shot and didn’t like it, at least I can give Bayonetta the same chance. Good thing one of my buddies are getting it in the future.
@Yazuka
Well I’ve been playing the DMC-series for a long time, since the first game came out and I have to say in an unusual way the series has become somewhat of a favorite. Mostly because of the action and it’s pretty much the epic battles and the laid-back do-not-have-to-think-too-much gameplay that gets me.
I just feel like slicing stuff up sometimes
@Christoffer Radsby
Yeah, I can understand that. but for some reason I”ve never thought the DMC series was good.
I borrowed the first one from a friends but I could only keep my interest up for a few hours. =/
Then I borrowed DMC4, which by some miracle I manage to finish.
I think its a real shame, since I really like Dante as a character and I think the games are cool. But yes, sadly I can’t seem to like ‘em. =(
@Yazuka
Well I guess it depends on what kind of games you like, even though I liked the fourth game to me some of the bosses felt like lazyness as well as the levels. Re-using them with minor changes feels lazy.
My only problem with this game is that it’s too messy for me. Haha. I still love Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. I think that I would probably would love God of War too,
@Alex
It’s only messy when you are not the one playing, when you play yourself you are in control.
