Gaming weekly w3 – Dante’s Inferno
Monday, January 18, 2010When I first heard about Dante’s Inferno I thought that the world would see an awesome game based The Divine Comedy. I thought we would see some kind of story of a person that descends the different levels of hell. I kept thinking that we could see some kind of mysterious and complex main character, that would keep us guessing what his crime was until the end. But in the end the developers goes with hell-themed God of War clone, which in the end looks pretty awesome. The game is a third-person action/adventure with focus on the action. It’s being developed by Visceral Games (former EA Redwood Shores) and being published by EA. You might know the developers by their games, The Godfather: The Game, The Godfather II, The Simpsons Game and the really great game Dead Space.
Straight down to hell

The game itself is another Devil May Cry/God of War-type game, this means a lot of hack’n slash/beat-em up type battles. Dante the main character is a knight of the Third Crusade, when things go bad and even Lucifer comes to visit his girlfriend and drags her down to hell Dante decides to follow and leave destruction and mutilated opponents in his wake. The pursuit of his girlfriend leads him through all the different levels of hell where Dante needs to face his own sins. To defend himself Dante has got a scythe, some different magic attacks and the ability to chain combos and juggle his opponents we see some solid promise for this action game.
Dante also has the ability to block and counter attacks, when timed correctly Dante can block an enemy attack and counter it with some pretty powerful moves. I’ve always liked the idea of counter attacks, they give games much variety and satisfaction when pulled off. They also makes the fighting-gameplay more explosive and intense. Since most of these types of games probably would be boring without any rewards Dante has the ability to harvest souls of the damned once he has destroyed their bodies. The souls can be used to gain new abilities and attacks. The harvesting of souls also provides a moral dilemma, if you use Dantes main weapon to punish your enemies you get unholy points but if you use his cross instead to absolve enemies you get holy points. The holy points can level up holy skills and unholy points level up the unholy skills, simple as that. The moral dilemma to stay pure and good might be really hard since you’re going through all the levels of hell, so I might sway around the second level (Lust).
Might be a solid experience
The game itself seems to be a pretty solid action-experience, and I know that lots of people love these types of games. I bet many out there has their doubts when it comes to this game. But hey, even if the game is half as good as God of War it’s pretty sure to be a good game. If you want more you can always give the demo a whirl, it’s been out on Xbox live since December 10. The release of the game is also scheduled for February 4th in the EU.

I played the demo but thought it was kinda avarage. And I found the quick time events to be more anoying than helpful. It’s not a game I’m gonna pick up from the store, but I do think it will be appreciated by those who enjoys the genre. It’s not a GOTY though.
@EMMYZ
I agree even though I haven’t played the demo myself, quicktime events are not that great actually, Resident Evils quicktime events was really bad, I remember getting really frustrated together with my co-op partner when we both had to be on the ready and nail every input.
I’ve been playing Bayonetta for a while now, and man. It’s a great game so far, the gameplay is awesome.
