How to score in MW2 playing tactically
Thursday, February 4, 2010
First of all I want to say that I’m not a FPS guy, I have decent reflexes but when it comes down to it I just use my wit to make the game go in my favor. I really prefer low bloodpressure games like Mass Effect 2 than those that make you stressed out/frustrated/irritated. I always play tactically when I play competetive first-person-shooters, I do not use glitches, I find them a cheap way to score a few extra points. Playing tactically does not mean “to camp”, tactical gameplay is cautious gameplay and tactical gameplay is about cleaning out one area and moving on to the next, making tactical decisions so that you may trap the enemy on one part of the map. This is easier to do when playing with a team however.
I follow simple rules that I have thought up myself to keep myself from becoming a “run&gun action junkie drone” like many other MW2 players.
Rules of Engagement

1
My first main and most important rule: “A dead soldier is a worthless soldier“. Even though I like Search & Destroy (C-S gamemode) I tend to play Team Deathmatch sometimes as well. In Team Deathmatch you spawn until either the time goes out or one team wins by score. Even when I play Team Deathmatch I’m not happy about getting 30 kills and 25 deaths, Kills minus Deaths is all that counts to me. I don’t plan on dying that much when I play.
Do not try to shoot every enemy you see, do not run out of cover to follow an enemy like a fool. Wait for the right moment to kill, if you notice that you’ll have a hard time to kill an enemy then don’t, there will always be another sorry player that will be walking into your cross-hair.
2
Sometimes you’ll do pretty good when playing, but one other important rule of playing tactically is changing location. If you stay at the same location after you kill somebody the enemy will come and search for you. Then you have two choices either take em on on your turf or get the hell out of there. Do not stay in the same location if you feel like you couldn’t handle several enemies coming to get you.
After you’ve killed an enemy, change location. Run to cover and secure the area. If you stay in one place too long and you’ve killed several enemies there is a big chance that they’ll come after you just because they’ll think you’re camping.
3
Playing with strangers is sometimes good, sometimes bad, but most of the time bad. Most of the time you’ll see players running around and getting killed all the time, those guys are probably run&gunners. To stay alive keep to yourself.
If you’re playing with strangers, move around the map by yourself, do not count on the fact that your teammates will cover your back. Why go by yourself you ask? Teammates make noises making the enemy hear you or distract you from the enemy, teammates shoot without thinking, teammates calls in care packages at bad locations, in the end do not count on them.
4
There is always one way to gain an advantage over your enemies and that is good equipment, I mean a big tv and great headphones will help your chances greatly.
Always listen, your enemies might be near you without you knowing, keep your head down and crouch to be able to hear them. All enemies reload their weapons, change weapons, jumps etc even if they use the Ninja Perk.
5
Using silenced weapons have some advantages, but do not rule out the fact that range and damage might be reduced if you use it. Not using a silencer has its advantages too, it makes you able to use a sight to help you aim and not waste your first perk on Bling. Not using a silencer will help you lure the enemies your way. As long as you know they’re coming you’ll have the advantage.
6
Always have a one-shot kill weapon at the ready, you never know when you’ll need to use it in cramped hallways or buildings. It’s always good to have a shotgun at the ready if you know an enemy will come through a door or an opening.
7
Being behind-enemy-line is your best friend. Enemies in the area will notice you and go after you first, which gives you the perfect opportunity to strike back with traps, stealthy corners and flanking maneuvers when they come running like fools.
8
Do not underestimate going prone, when behind enemy lines if you can find dark shadowy places they’ll help you hide, places with lots of stuff laying around will help as well. If you hear enemies around grassy areas go prone and there is a big chance they’ll walk right by you even if you don’t have a ghillie suit.

These are the basic tips I have to give, all the other things comes with experience. If you play the maps enough you’ll know every nook and cranny, if you play enough you’ll notice the most used paths the enemies use. In the end I play this game when I’m too tired to invest my time into Mass Effect or games like it. I play to have fun and I have the most fun when I take the tactical gaming seriously.

This will come in useful. Number 1 jumps out at me from my days playing in a Rainbow Six: Vegas clan. We had one exceptionally good player, and if you actually looked at what he did to make him so good, it would be because he picked what fights to take on carefully, and which ones to leave. I have a bad habit of seeing anyone and assuming I must try and kill them.

Yeah, many jump at the first opportunity they get, when you know to pick your battles everything becomes easier, and since you’re not dying as often you won’t get as frustrated when playing. Frustrated players make mistakes such as running after enemies or rushing in bad situations. You got to act professional, in the end it’s all about survival, and winning the game.
