I appreciate games and gamers

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

classic_nintendo_by_nallieI appreciate people that take the time and actually think about what they like and dislike about video-games, I’m talking about people that explains in detail what “things” about a game that they like and dislike. I’m talking about kids, teenagers, grown-ups, male, female, skinny or fat people that like video-games and wants to share their love. Then I’ll be there talking and eagerly waiting for their thoughts.

I believe that it’s only by dissecting a game you can actually start to understand the beauty behind it, and it’s those thoughts that starts the craving for the perfect game. Be a pro working in the video-game development industry or an amateur with a love for games in the end both parties searches for that one game that is their dream game. An Internet friend of mine, (yeah I’d call her a friend, not only because she’s friendly and talented but because our connection as gamers) spends a lot of time thinking about what she likes and dislikes and I like reading her posts because in the end I’m still searching for others that appreciates games just as much as I do. There is a special connection to everyone I meet that shares my passion for video-games, I get very excited and start asking questions though I try to hold it back because it can seem too “nerdy-like” once I start yapping.

Magical experience

Video-games are magical, they are more visual than books but not necessarily lesser when it comes to the writing and story. They are more interactive than movies but just as engaging and dramatic. They let players take control over people other than themselves and decide what to do and how to handle situations, and sometimes you get to be the main character. How many books and movies manages that? There is nothing like the feeling of spending 10 minutes in the darkness with a scary game and be so paralyzed of fear that you can’t move your in-game avatar because you’re afraid of what lies ahead. There is nothing like the feeling of exploring and discovering treasures, traversing wastelands and wonderful lush worlds. There is nothing like diving into the immersion of the codex of bigger games such as Dragon Age or Mass Effect when the developers has created a wonderful encyclopedia of information about their world. There is nothing like trying out that new game-mechanic for the first time and feel it’s awesomeness. Like leaping from a building as spider-man or free-running on rooftops or slay a thousand goblins. There is nothing like it.

Some day I’ll land a job in the video-game industry and I hope you guys still follow me then because my passion will most likely never burn out, I know that most of you guys follow me on your RSS-readers, but land me a comment sometimes eh? I want to get to know you and your opinions, and someday I might even take you to a grand release-party of a game. I still remember my first one, Oh that glorious day.

Thanks for the link love, Chris. I can’t wait to see where you end up with your career, but you’re certainly talented enough to go as far as you want. I’m glad you’re certain your passion will burn just as strong when the time comes to not just play video games, but to be involved in the making of them, and I’ll still be reading your blog :)

Heart warming words Ashley :) Some day I’ll make it and be there on the end credits of a major RPG. Hopefully you can get addicted to that one as well ;)

This post got me thinking. I think I’m later going to dissect what I like and dislike about games/genres.
I think it can be very fun and a good experience.

I sure hope you can live out your dream man. It would be awesome to own a game, that you would have worked on. You’ll have my support.
I find most of your posts have are full of inspiration, for me. Gotta sit down one day and post something about my dreams and what I would work on.

I think it’s a good idea to do that, it makes you see what features certain genres or games lack, I always ask myself: Why do I like this game? I like it because of the atmosphere? What in the atmosphere do I like? etc.

It’s a good thing to do, that way you’ll come up with some really nice answers and solutions to stuff.
