The gaming fall-winter of 2009

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

So I decided to make some kind of list over the games that will be coming this fall and winter. Of course I will only write about the games that I find interesting. So here we go, and yeah the dates may not be correct.

Colin McRae DiRT 2 (September 11)

colin_mcrae_dirt_2_1So first and foremost we got Colin McRae DiRT 2 coming soon, the previous game was a graphical marvel and a really fun and explosive rally experience. I had a blast with the demo, it’s looking really good and I can’t wait to race my friends.

Need for Speed Shift (September 17)

Need for Speed Shift-06The new NfS game, the last two game were fiaskos, maybe this one will make up for it. When I saw the in-game shots of this game I actually thought it was GRID. We’ll see just how good it really is later on, I’m kind of sceptical but still a bit interested in this title.

Halo 3: ODST (September 22)

halo-3-odstYeah no worries, this game is going to rock, this game focuses on the “Orbital Drop Shock Troopers” as they drop into the ruined city of New Mombasa. The campaign is set before the events of Halo 3 and we will be able to play as one of them. This means we will not play as Master Chief but still able to experience the Halo universe with a less powerful soldier. Fans are going crazy over this one.

Risen (October 5)

risenDeep Silvers RPG-project comes to life. In this game the protagonist wakes up on a beach after a storm turned his ship into kindling. Bizarre creatures infest the island and our hero uses his mighty stick of vengeance (as seen on GC 09 Walkthroughs) to kill some beasts and reptiles and what not. It seems that the game feels very Gothic-like which is a good thing in my eyes, since I liked Gothic 2 and 3.

Alpha Protocol (October 6)

alphaprotocolOne of my favorite developers (Obsidian Entertainment) delivers an agent themed action-rpg. You play as Micheal Thorton, a talented young agent cast out by his government. This game will be all about decisions, depending on what actions you do, and the decisions you make you will ultimately change what kind of agent Micheal will be. These choices will also have an consequences.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (October 9)

operationflashpoint2I really like military simulators, and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising will probably be the best one yet. It’s a first-person shooter with an open-world concept. Since it’s more realistic than arcade the gameplay will be a bit slower than your regular first-person shooter. The game will of course feature an extensive multiplayer-mode. Sounds awesome in my ears, using military tactics and teamwork online is something I really like.

Brütal Legend (October 13)

brutalThis is the latest creation of Tim Schafer (awesome guy), Brutal Legend is a 3rd person fantasy action/adventure game starring Jack Black (YES!) in the role of Eddie Riggs. Eddie Riggs has the ambition to create an epic army of rockers and has been transported through time to a rock and roll fantasy world. This game is going to be sweet, I love Jack Black and the art direction of this game.
We got so many desaturated shooters today it’s nice to have a change of scenery. A demo is confirmed for this month as well, so be sure to check it out.

Borderlands (October 20)

borderGearbox gives us Borderlands, a sci-fi/action RPG that combines the best in first person action with player customization. Vehicular combat will also be a big aspect of this game, the amount of depth in content is amazing because of the games’ content generation system allowing almost an endless amount of content to be created. This means variaty in missions, environments, weapons, items and customization. The game also features a really nice coop experience, whereas the players can freely join or leave each others game at any time. This is definitely one of the years most anticipated releases.

Forza Motorsport 3 (October 27)

forza3Ahh, Forza Motorsport 3. I look forward to this one but only as a stepping stone for the next Gran Turismo. For my part this game will probably be less interesting than DiRT 2 since I’m not a big fan of simulation racing, not the overly “must tune every vehicle part” aspect of the genre.

Tekken 6 (October 27)

tekken6newscr_002-largeThe king of fighting games will soon be released, I still remember the close up shots of Jin Kazama, really nice stuff. It’s been a while since I played a really good fighting game, since my friends sucks at fighting games (no offense) I find it really hard to keep my fighting game spirit going. This will probably keep me busy for a while though.

Dragon Age: Origins (November 3)

dragonageAh the spiritual successor of the Baldur’s Gate-series, I’m in awe. This game is the one nr 1 game I have looked forward to all year. Since I love RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 1-2 + expansions, Neverwinter Night 1-2 + expansions. This game will be a game for the hardcore RPG-fans. The game will feature deep character customization and role-playing, morally challenging decisions, tactical party-based combat and a wealth of gritty, mature sub-plots. The game is a dark and heroic fantasy game where the players choices really matter, it affects the people around you and the world.

The different character conversation options will change depending on what kind of character you are, you choose your origin and from the starting point, your story begins. You’ll play through your characters early years defining his/her background. The game takes place in the world Ferelden. It’s a must for any RPG-lover.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (November 10)

codWe have all seen the trailers, it looks awesome. In November we will experience the true bliss of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The previous game was a game created by Infinity Ward. They took the Call of Duty-series and took into the modern age and actually made the CoD-series even more brilliant. The first game is still one of the top-played games on Xbox Live and PSN to this day, accompanied by Halo 3.

Assassin’s Creed II (November 17)

ac2The story of the Assassins continue, this time around I bet Ubisoft has made some dramatic changes to both gameplay and missions. This time around we will be playing in Italy as the assassins Ezio. Ezio befriends Leonardo da Vinci and with da Vincis help becomes a master assassin. Hopefully this time around the missions won’t be as repetative, I bet the atmosphere will be just as great as the first one though, those animations are to die for.

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (Q4 2009)

divinity2egodraconis051_2Another RPG coming our way. In Divinity 2 players find themselves once again in Rivellion, a world of magic and it’s lands frightened and scarred by wars of the past. Players begin as a Dragon Slayer, hunters whom travel the countryside determined to rid their lands of Dragons. It’s the usual mix of role-playing and character customization, it will probably not be as good as Dragon Age though, but they seem to be quite different from each other considering that Dragon Age seems to have more depth to it. It’s worth a look though.

Dungeon Hero (Q4 2009)

dhI remember seeing this game a long time ago, and it seemed to capture the feeling if a really dark semi-realistic fantasy world. It’s an action RPG and uses Firefly’s HD engine, allowing players to storm heoically through underground halls whilst seeing much detail and complexity of a the world. You can play it by yourself or with some friends, probably perfect for some console LAN-parties.

Just Cause 2 (Q4 2009)

justcause2The Swedish developers Avalanche is currently working on their third person action game. A massive world, awesome graphics with fun and intense gameplay. It seems to be a really sweet singleplayer experience. Avalanche is really talanted, I’m amazed at the size of the world they are creating, and everything to be running without problems also. You can check it out at gametrailers.

Max Payne 3 (Q4 2009)

maxpayneThe latest images from the new Max Payne made me a bit skeptical, but I trust Rockstar Vancouver, their game Bully was a pretty solid game. I guess Remedy is busy with Alan Wake right now.

You need money to buy games

It’s too bad I probably won’t be able to buy all of these games, as long as I get Dragon Age I’ll be fine.
